Healthcare

Every person across America deserves access to affordable, quality health care.

Every person across America deserves access to affordable, quality health care. Despite declining numbers of uninsured following passage of the Affordable Care Act, rates are again on the rise.  For everyone who desires and needs coverage, we must eliminate coverage gaps and provide affordable avenues to meet the demand. However, simply extending coverage is not enough; only increasing overall cost in the provision of care and expense to the taxpayer. Already, the United States spends more per capita than any other nation on health care, yet rates of chronic disease are high. A focus on covered preventive services for all, early diagnosis of chronic health problems, and access to needed medications is a start.

It is time to fix our superfluous spending and system problems. Development of a financing system to protect people from financial hardship and impoverishment from excessive and unnecessary health care costs is a critical component to reducing social inequities.

It also makes fiscal sense. Although we are coalescing around the idea that healthcare is a right, many worry about the economic impact of universal coverage for all. However, the burden for providing care already falls to us and our tax dollars through increased hospital costs due to unreimbursed services, and the high cost of medical bills and subsequent impact leading to bankruptcy, poverty and utilization of other government assistance programs.

The American Journal of Public Health in an article titled, Potential National and State Medical Care Savings from Primary Disease Prevention from 2011, found that by investing in prevention a 5% reduction in the prevalence of hypertension would save the government $25 billion over 5 years.

Health Affairs, the leading journal of health policy thought and research, published in 2010 that every dollar spent on wellness programs saves $3.27 on medical costs and $2.73 on absenteeism costs to businesses. Preventative medicine works.

Affordable healthcare is both the right answer and the fiscally responsible answer.
