It has been a privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to run for Congress. I know that few of us in our community get such an opportunity and for that I have immense appreciation. The spirit of the people in our area has left me inspired and will remain one of my fondest memories to this point in my life. I have also learned more than I could have dreamed possible at the start of this journey about the political process, the state of our country and the obstacles we must overcome to find real solutions.
It is, however, time for me to withdraw from this race. I do so with some regret, but also with a heart filled with appreciation for the chance I had. The conversations I have had with so many of you have shaped my thoughts and my understanding for the needs of our great country. I have no doubt they will continue to impact me for the rest of my life.
In January, I made the difficult decision to stop fundraising for this election, when it was made clear to the candidates that endorsements on the Democratic side would be made without fair consideration of all the Democratic candidates. This was a disappointment, but faced with that reality, I decided on principle that I could not continue to actively ask donors for their hard-earned monetary support.
As this process has continued to accelerate, I know it is only right that I choose to withdraw at this time. I continue to believe in the spirit of our values, and I hope that my departure will help those important values be better represented in Congress. Further, I hope that our party will continue to learn from 2016 and beyond. We have an immense opportunity to continue to become a more perfect representation for the people in our community who are in desperate need of a voice. We can be that voice, and I know there are so many among us working toward that cause.
For me personally, I will continue to be engaged as an activist as I was before, and I am soon to publish a book: Twilight of the Idols: An American Story, which I hope to share with you all. It will share ideas that I know many of you already share with me, because it is formed from our very conversations. It will highlight the areas where our Country is no longer providing opportunity where it once did, and how we can reclaim that legacy that gives everyone a shot and preserves a strong middle class.
I would love to hear from you all now more than ever. As my book becomes available, I hope to hear from many of you to share with me your stories. If any of the experiences I am exploring exist in your life, please reach out to let me know.
I am going to continue to be active in a number of the community projects I got involved in during the campaign process, and if you think there are other projects I should know about and might be helpful with as a private citizen please reach out to me as well.
It has been an honor, and I look forward to continuing to do what I can to benefit our community as a private citizen. I hope you will join me in that effort.
